Rare Game of the Week: Punch-Out!! Gold Edition

“Limited Edition”

What is this we got here? Well in this week’s Rare Game of the Week (RGOTW) [ED NOTE: I love acronyms] we have the amazing NES classic, Punch-Out!! but in a new limited edition flavor and that flavor is gold, baby.

Punch-Out!! Gold Edition is the unofficial name. Officially, it is just Punch-Out!! but this is a special mail-in edition that you could get in Japan by faxing in you scores from the NES game, Family Computer Golf: U. S. Course using the Disk Fax kiosk at stores in Japan. About 10,000 of these limited editions were given away. The first 5,000 were given out to high scorers, with the top 100 scorers receiving a trophy. The remaining copies were given out in two raffles. If you got a hole-in-one, you were put into a raffle for one of 1,000 copies of the game while the last 4,000 copies were raffled off to those who had a a 1, 4, 9, or 2 at the end of their ranking.

What makes it rare is that it is old, it is Nintendo, it is different, and most importantly it is a “mail-in”. Mail-in’s are ALWAYS collectible. I love that it is gold and that the shape of the cartridge mimics an NES cart, not a Famicom cart. It is also important to note that it is the only Famicom game to use an NES chip, the NES-PT-0.

In-game differences are minor. The opening scene is different. There is no Mr. Dream or Mike Tyson. The background palette is a bit different in the fights. The last difference is that the GAME OVER screen uses really crappy English.

So, we have an interesting piece here. Complete with cartridge, instructions, box, and plastic sleeve this sells for around $250. Just the cart can be bought for anywhere between $50-$150. Is it worth it, maybe. Will it increase in value, VERY YES.

Will you be doing more rare game of the week’s? I saw that at the show as well thought it was a little high, but nonetheless a great game for any collection.
