Opinion piece: Wii U fails to impress
Those of you who follow my work here know I am primarily a Sony gamer and usually don’t comment outside of that spectrum. Today the internet was flooded with videos and articles about the WII U and its getting a lot of praise. After watching most of the launch title videos and reading the specs I cannot believe how abysmal the showing for the WII U really was. The Wii U will be priced at 300-350 dollars depending on the bundle with graphics just slightly better than the ps3 with most of its launch titles being games from last year. Some of the star titles for the console include Mass Effect 3 and Darksiders 2. When the WII U launches most of its games library will be on Xbox and ps3 for cheaper. Why would I buy a WII U for 350 dollars which comes with abysmal storage space slightly better graphics for 6-8 month old games? Does anyone remember the jump from ps2 over to ps3 or Xbox to 360? The jump in graphics was astounding, which is the main selling point for dropping 300-500 dollars on a new console you want to see that big leap in technology. The Wii U provides nothing but catch up to hardware we currently have on other consoles.
The few exclusives the WII U has will probably be immaculate, like any first party games I imagine the future Zelda and Metroid games will be great but that doesn’t sell me on a $300 console. . My money will remain locked in my wallet ,until I see what Xbox and PS4 have to offer. The Tablet Controller is also way too expensive, time will tell if it works well, but at the moment, it seems gimmicky and that leaves a bitter taste. Nintendo sure sold a plethora of Wii unit’s last gen but the problem was it did not appeal to hard core gamers and software didn’t sell. Companies take big losses on consoles in order to sell them cheap, the strategy is to make the profit later in accessory and game sales. The Wii failed because it sold millions of units but only to soccer moms who bought WII fit and nothing else. I had hoped that WII U would learn from this mistake but in my humble opinion they have not. Why spend 350 dollars to play games at marginally better graphics than what the ps3 and Xbox can already do? If you’re smart you will wait to see what Microsoft and Sony has to offer before rushing out and buying a console that may be obsolete in the next year or so.
