F-Zero X: Prepare to Die Edition
I was never much into racing simulators yet ‘F-Zero X’ for N64 holds a special place in my heart, if only for the lulz. Let’s get one thing clear: My brother and I were never very good at it. We rarely played the game and when we did, we cheated. F-Zero X however was ahead of its time in that it featured several circuits including the ‘X’ cup, actually a series of randomly generated race courses! Often it would generate mundane tracks hardly unique from the pre-made levels. But, sometimes, the tracks were so difficult that unless you could react within a tenth of a second you would plummet to your death. Was this upsetting? Hardly! A procession of 30 AI controlled cars launching off a 90-degree turn at thousands of miles an hour and erupting into a display commensurable to fireworks, is one of the funniest things you will ever see.
Occasionally, through a combination of sheer luck and really eager AI, you alone would survive. Watch the video below where the player is the only pilot on the course!
(Stick around for the 2:50 mark. I promise you will laugh your ass off!)
