Arlin Plays Psychonauts- The Milkman Conspiracy
Alright, it’s been a while in coming but… the Milkman Conspiracy. This is a fascinating level in that it’s the first time that we are diving into the mind of a totally, undeniably insane human. Not counting certain megalomaniacal coaches. Interestingly, it’s as if he has all the pieces for what is normal in society, but lacks the direction to know how the pieces fit together, resulting in the twisting labyrinthine streets and the utter misuse of most tools. Having a milkman represent his innermost rage is another odd choice, yet it seems strangely fitting in this context. Plus, with the way the level is set up, it isn’t apparent until the very end that the G men running rampant throughout the level are in fact extensions of the censors that everyone has, trying to stamp out the milkman, even if they are unsuccessful. Even the empty houses spoke of his lack of context for them, as there was nobody living in them aside from the odd G man. The Rainbow Squirts, to me, seemed more like Coach Oleander’s influence trying to keep his rage in check to make him useful than anything else.
From a game perspective, this level is a hell of a lot of fun. Much of that can be attributed to some of the most hilarious voice over work in the game, but even discounting that, I found it quite entertaining to go through collecting various tools and figuring out how it all fit in. Plus I certainly appreciate a power that not only lets you see through the literal eyes of others, but let’s you see through their perspective, adding a whole layer of interesting options, even if it adds a lot of work on the development side of things. All in all, a very well designed level.
