Arlin Plays Psychonauts- Finale
Before I get started here, I’m going to make a quick announcement. For my previous games, I have tried to sum up my thoughts on the entire game during the end credits. However, something that far ranging (especially given the time frame I produce these in) is difficult for me to summarize on the spot, and I’d prefer to simply analyze the episode itself, and limit the scope that way. Therefore, starting with Psychonauts, I will be making a separate post giving a full review of the game, coming out the day after the post for the final episode.
I also realized that yesterday’s post was incorrect; the escort mission I talk about is actually in the final episode, rather than Meat Circus. My apologies.
So, as for this one, I definitely notice a rather large difficulty spike in this last part of the game. Not even during the escort section, which was bad enough, but the rest of it is more difficult than the rest of the game, noticeably. In the final boss encounter, either a mistake results in instant death, or in a significant amount of damage. If I hadn’t been so thorough in my collection, this would have been extremely difficult for me to get through, and in a game where collection is made out to be optional, it seems rather off to have the last boss fights be this unforgiving. I have the advantage of having at least played this part before, so I knew what I was in for. But a new player might die many, many times before finally getting through, and I can’t imagine that being pleasant in this last level. As much as I hate to say it… this last level may be one of the bigger mistakes this game has.
